He has served as a Worthologist for WorthPoint, a peer reviewer for the Marine Corps University's Marine History, and a contributor to key reference works, including North South Trader's The Civil War Collector's Price Guide and Warman's Civil War Collectibles: Identification and Price Guide.​

William’s passion for military buttons began in his youth, sparked by attending Company of Military Historians meetings with his father, Lewis Leigh, Jr. As a child, he purchased buttons from Alphaeus “Dewey” Albert, author of The Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons, a formative experience that deepened his lifelong fascination. Early influences included relic hunters and traders like Tommy Johnson and John Duggan, as well as esteemed collectors such as Joe Johnston, Joe Leisch, Cecil Anderson, Bruce Bazelon, and Bill McGuinn, all of whom helped shape his journey in the hobby.
