About Us

Photo of William Leigh

William Leigh has played a pivotal role in building some of the most extensive and significant military button collections of modern times. A life member of both the Company of Military Historians and the American Button Society, William is widely recognized as a leading expert in the field. He serves as a consultant on American military buttons for North South Trader's Civil War Magazine and American Digger Magazine.

William's contributions to the field are numerous. He has served as a Worthologist for WorthPoint, a peer reviewer for the Marine Corps University's Marine History, and a contributor to key reference works, including North South Trader's The Civil War Collector's Price Guide and Warman's Civil War Collectibles: Identification and Price Guide.

William’s passion for military buttons began in his youth, sparked by attending Company of Military Historians meetings with his father, Lewis Leigh, Jr. As a child, he purchased buttons from Alphaeus “Dewey” Albert, author of The Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons, a formative experience that deepened his lifelong fascination. Early influences included relic hunters and traders like Tommy Johnson and John Duggan, as well as esteemed collectors such as Joe Johnston, Joe Leisch, Cecil Anderson, Bruce Bazelon, and Bill McGuinn, all of whom helped shape his journey in the hobby.

From relic hunting in the 1970s to attending Civil War shows, William’s devotion to the field has never wavered. His expertise extends beyond collecting, as he enthusiastically shares his knowledge with others.

William is eager to help you explore this fascinating hobby. Whether you’re looking to understand rarity, identify backmarks, or gain insights into collecting strategies, he is here to guide you. Use his decades of experience as a resource to build and enhance your own collection.

Heith Hart is a contributor to the website. He has a passion for early America history and is an avid Civil War era button collector. Look forward to seeing contributions from Heith on our blog page and throughout the website.
