Prior to the advent of the rifled musket and the resulting increase in range and accuracy enjoyed by the common infantryman, military uniforms were very ornate. Flashy colors, trim, and fire gilt buttons were the standard.
Although few of these uniforms have survived down the years, many of the ornate and attractive buttons that adorned them have. Regimental insignia, state seals, and school crests are a few of the many devices that have been intricately stamped into the faces of uniform buttons. There is an incredibly vast array of types, sizes and rarities which adds to the excitement of the hobby.
