23mm, Maine State Staff Officer coat button with a "Scovill Mf'g Co./Waterbury" backmark. This is a solid example that was found at Stoneman's Switch in Stafford Co., VA. There is a very light push to the top of button (just every so slightly flattening out the peak of the convexity)-- you feel it, rather than see it, but it is mentioned for the sake of accuracy. Google the interesting history of Stoneman's Switch. The 20th Maine was encamped near Stoneman's Switch before the battle of Fredericksburg and Historical arist John Paul Strain painted "March at Dawn" as an attempt to capture their move toward the Battle of Fredericksburg. In the foreground are featured the commanders Col. Adelbert Ames and Lt. Col. Joshua Chamberlain. During the war, both men would receive their country's highest honor for gallantry, the Congressional Medal of Honor. The button cannot be specifically attributed to the 20th Maine of Gettysburg and Little Round Top fame, but it is has a very real chance of being so.
